Quality and safety in the independent healthcare sector 2024
National Joint Registry (NJR)
The number of completed procedures submitted to NJR over the past 10 years has risen from just under 74,000 in 2015 to almost 140,000 in 2024. The plot below illustrates that growth and the mix of procedures submitted.
High patient consent rates are important because they allow the NJR to link dataset together, for example, to link a primary and revision operation to analyse outcomes. The graph below shows that NJR consent rates for orthopaedic procedures carried out by independent providers have been consistently around or above 90% since around 2010, except for the peak of the pandemic period.
In 2024, the NJR Data Quality audit award three tiers of awards to organisations submitting to the NJR. 251 hospitals received gold awards, 49 silver and 14 bronze. 57% of the gold award winners were independent providers.
